Takoradi Anchorage Pirate Attack

We can go months without a report of a pirate attack on a ship, and then suddenly, they happen more frequently. On 12 December 2024, an attack was reported to the ICC. The attack happened on 7 December 2024.

“Attacks can come in groups,” says Steven Zimmerman, captain of the Moxichoring. “Collectively, we begin to let our guard down. Days can turn into weeks without an attack so that we may be security. It’s during this time that pirates start to bolster their presence.”

That is what is happening; those set up to take ships and their cargo are increasing their numbers in hopes of improving their odds.

“Over the last couple of days,” says Robert Donovan, a sailor who works off the East Coast of Africa, “we’ve seen a lot more boats off in the distance—small boats favored by the bad guys in these waters. They are hungry.”

This latest attack happened at position 04:53.3N – 001:39.5W at Takoradi Anchorage, Ghana.

Crew members who were on duty and making routine rounds around the ship, a bulk carrier, spotted three armed robbers near the forecastle store. The intrusion was reported, and the alarm sounded.

One of the robbers threatened the watchman on duty with a knife while the others scoured the ship for items to steal. When the pirates saw the approaching patrol boat, the robbers escaped with property stolen from the ship.

Modern-day pirate boardings usually involve a small, fast boat. The typical target is the larger cargo ships. The pirates try to board the vessel, by force if necessary, to steal cargo or take the crew hostage to demand ransom.

“The pirates like the larger, slower cargo ships in vulnerable areas,” says Steven Zimmerman. “The farther away you are from traditional shipping lanes, the greater your chance of an encounter.”

Pirates are known to use violence when boarding. In the past, Captains have reported loss of life and damage to their ships.

The best defense is a great offense. When you enter waters known to harbor modern-day pirates, you should increase your security protocols. If you are able, armed security teams are the best. Additionally, a robust surveillance system and fortified areas are a must.

When you see suspected pirates, report it to the maritime authorities.
