We received the following question from Matthew Stone, a Las Cruces, New Mexico visitor.
“I will be in Las Cruces for a few weeks having my RV serviced. I love to fish and would like to know what is nearby.”
New Mexico has access to some excellent fishing for a landlocked state. Whether you feel like having a peaceful afternoon on the water or fishing, there’s an option for you. These are a few of our favorites, but they are just a short drive out of Las Cruces, NM.
- Leasburg Dam State Park
Leasburg Dam State Park is quietly tucked away just outside Las Cruces, a serene spot to cast your line. In addition to fishing, you can enjoy activities like hiking, birdwatching, educational programs for the whole family, camping, and perusing the gorgeous cactus garden. Non-motorized boats, canoes, and kayaks are permitted on the dam.
- Elephant Butte Lake State Park
For something a little further out, head north to Elephant Butte Lake State Park, New Mexico’s largest state park. Sandy beaches encircle water known for record-breaking bass and stripers, so you’ll be a happy visitor whether you feel like fishing or just lounging under the sun with a bookâthe lake houses all sorts of watercraft, from jet skis and pontoons to cruisers and houseboats. There are also picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids.
- Caballo Lake State Park
A stone’s throw away from Elephant Butte is Caballo Lake State Park, where you can fish surrounded by the dazzling Caballo Mountains. The lake is home to crappie, catfish, bass, and walleye species. Give yourself time to catch them all by staying at one of the four campgrounds.
- Percha Dam State Park
Looking to avoid the sun? Why not visit Percha Dam State Park, where cottonwood, olive, and cedar trees provide shade over the dam and make for a peaceful, secluded fishing experience? Smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye, and black bass are just some fish you can reel in. Stretch your legs by hiking along one of the park’s rugged, unmarked trails, or even head out on a scenic bike ride.
I hope that helps! Enjoy your stay.
